What are pellets?
Pellets are an implant usually placed into the upper buttocks or hip by your treatment provider. This implant is about the size of a grain of rice, and will slowly release your dose of hormones to you as your body needs, until such a time it has fully dissolved into the body and is no longer able to release hormones. At this time, we would advise getting a new implant. For most patients, this cycle is between 3 to 6 months between pellet insertions.
What is the difference between pellets and things like creams?
While creams and injections are common forms of treatment for hormonal imbalance, pellets require much less maintenance from the patient. Pellets also have the added benefit of having a consistent dosage, where creams can vary since they are dependent on the individual remembering to use it and also use a consistent amount. This makes pellet therapy much easier for patients to achieve and maintain the results of their treatment – because it requires nearly no maintenance from the individual, other than keeping their appointments on time.
What is the process for getting pellets like?
Here at LaserSpa of Tampa Bay, we want to make sure that your process for treatment is as hassle-free as possible. Initially, we will have you meet with our Biote-trained nurse practitioner, to go over your symptoms and concerns for treatment as well as costs. Then, if you do not have recent labs done by your doctor’s office, we will either do them in-house, or we can give you a prescription to do them at the facility of your choice to be brought back to us. This will assure we have a good idea of your starting hormone levels and what you may need in terms of supplements and dosages for treatment. After this, and it is determined you are a good candidate for the treatment, we will schedule a date for your insertion.
Does insurance cover this procedure?
Unfortunately, we at LaserSpa do not accept any type of insurance. Our services are considered elective and thus are not eligible for coverage under most insurance policies. However, we do accept CareCredit, which may help you with the costs of treatment.
What kinds of side effects to treatment are there?
There are very few side effects associated with pellet hormone therapy. The most common, though still occurring in only 2% of patients, are mild acne and mild facial hair growth, and under 1% of patients may experience hair thinning. It is notable that pellet hormone therapy by Biote has very few side effects compared to other hormone treatment methods, because the pellets deliver the dosage to your body 24 hours a day for the period of treatment.
How often do I need to receive treatment for pellets?
Pellets generally need to be re-inserted every 3 to 6 months, depending on the dosage and the hormones necessary. Female patients may need to have them replaced more often than male patients due to the type of therapy needed.
How do pellets work?
As an implant inserted under the skin, your pellets will release the hormones needed by your body 24 hours a day, for as long as the dosage lasts. After the pellet has run out of its store of hormones, you will need to replace it in order for your hormones to continue being supplied. We recommend doing this every 3 to 6 months depending on the type of hormones and dose.
Can both men and women get pellets?
Yes! While this treatment is very popular with post-menopausal women, many people of different sexes can benefit from the use of hormone pellets. If you or your partner are interested in receiving treatment, please contact us to start your journey today!
